Although it is not a major increase since January fell 4.6% , the good news is that six of the last seven months have shown increases.  Since bottoming out in the summer of 2009 it is up 18.2%

“Fleets told us that February was decent and that played out in the numbers,” ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello said.   Costello noted that February’s month-to-month increase was sixth in the last seven months.”

Costello also mentioned that he is a little concerned over the increase in fuel prices as it is basically a tax on consumers and limits their spending.  Increases in manufacturing and consumer spending should increase as the housing market improves.

ATA Files A Petion To Review The FMCSA Hours of Service Ruling

The American Trucking Association has filed a petition with the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to review the FMSCA’s recent publication of the Hours of Service Rule changes. The FMSCA seems to have made changes to the rule set in 2004 with out the proper information. “We regret that FMCSA and the Obama administration have put ATA and its member companies in a position to take this legal action,” ATA President and CEO Bill Graves said.

“The rules that have been in place since 2004 have contributed to unprecedented improvement in highway safety. The law is clear about what steps FMCSA must undertake to change the rules and we cannot allow this rulemaking, which was fueled by changed assumptions and analyses that do not meet the required legal standards, to remain unchallenged.”

American Trucking Association shows a drop in January tonnage

American Trucking Association shows a drop in tonnage likely due to the fact that December was so strong, causing a drop in January.  We have noticed an increase in February’s freight volume.

ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello said the drop in tonnage probably reflected a larger than expected gain in December, rather than a real slowdown in freight.

“I’m not surprised that tonnage fell on a seasonally adjusted basis in January simply due to the fact that December was so strong,” said Costello. December’s increase was the largest month-to-month gain in truck tonnage since January 2005.

“I’m still optimistic about truck tonnage,” he said. “While many fleets said January was normal, they are also saying that February has been pretty good so far.”
